SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Severe budget cuts are facing San Diego County if lawmakers do not act soon. If lawmakers do not reach a deal March 1st, billions of dollars in cuts will kick in and they will affect most of us in some way.
Lawmakers can not seem to agree on how to avoid these cuts that will affect millions of Americans, including us right here in San Diego County. Republicans continue to push back against any plan that includes tax increases.
As the March 1st deadline approaches, President Barack Obama and congressional Republicans continue to try and reach an agreement regarding the sequestration which is set at $1.2 trillion in spending cuts.
Mandatory across the board cuts were triggered by the 2011 Budget Control Act because a bipartisan group could not agree on ways to slash the budget.
Congressman Scott Peters says these cuts will have a big impact in San Diego County, especially when it comes to our Military community, education, scientific research and investment in our ports.
Congressman Peters says he understands cuts need to be made but this is not the way to go about it.
