SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – A central San Diego neighborhood is returning to normal after being on high alert Tuesday morning, as police searched for a suspected killer at an area apartment complex.
San Diego police officers, as well as US Marshals, arrived overnight at the 4200 block of Juniper Street to search for a suspect involved in a deadly shooting in Otay Mesa.
Residents of the apartment complex were evacuated, as armed officers wearing gas masks moved in, breaking windows and firing pepper ball rounds into the unit around midnight. However, there was no response.
Two hours later, officers were able to obtain a key to gain access to the unit. That's when they realized the suspect was gone. After about a five minute search, they concluded that the suspect was no longer in the area.
The search lasted eight hours ending around 2 a.m. Tuesday and began when SDPD robbery detectives developed leads on a homicide in question that took place on February 28 on Caminito Quixote in Otay Mesa.
