Man shot in crime spree is out of hospital

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The young man shot in the head during a violent crime spree across San Diego is speaking to News 8 about the attack and the teenager now facing charges.

Four months after the shooting, Will Barton is out of the hospital and making an amazing recovery.

"Rehab is like the hardest thing in someone's life when you're trying to come off an injury," Barton told News 8.

Barton is still in a wheelchair after being shot as he walked home from work in Hillcrest last October.

"Three bullet wounds. One in the armpit, one in the shoulder, once in the head. The one in my shoulder ricocheted and went through my neck," he said.

The couple are accused of going on a countywide Bonnie and Clyde-style crime spree, during which Barton and an off-duty police officer were shot in separate incidents.

The gunman, 40-year-old Philip Hernandez, was killed in a police shootout. His wife, 18-year-old Cindy Garcia, is headed to trial and faces life in prison.

"She is evil. She is weak and I'm glad that her life is over too, you know? As well as his," Barton said.

Barton was apparently targeted by mistake. He says Garcia is just as much to blame, even though her husband allegedly pulled the trigger.

"It was totally intentional. It was her choice as well, you know?" he said.

Barton is prepared to testify against Garcia in court, even as he gets ready for another brain surgery next week.

"I'm going to keep going. I'm not going to stop at all. I'm going to be me again," he said.

Once Barton recovers, he plans to speak to other victims with traumatic brain injuries to help they stay strong.

His family is accepting donations to cover medical expenses at any Chase Bank branch under the "Friends of Will Barton" fund.
