Escondido house fire displaces family of 8

ESCONDIDO (CNS) - Flames engulfed an attached residential garage at an Escondido home Tuesday, leaving a family of eight in need of emergency housing and causing an estimated $50,000 worth of damage.

The non-injury blaze at Oak Hill Drive and Rose Street was reported shortly after 8:30 a.m., said Ken Slaven, a battalion chief with the Escondido Fire Department.

It took crews about 10 minutes to subdue the flames, which caused heavy damage to the garage, destroyed a vehicle parked inside it and left the residence without electrical service, according to Slaven. Fire and smoke damage to the living quarters of the single-story home was minimal, he said.

Investigators set the monetary losses at $40,000 to the structure and $10,000 to contents.

The American Red Cross was called in to help the displaced residents -- six adults and two children -- arrange for interim lodging.

The cause of the blaze remained under investigation in the mid-afternoon, Slaven said.
