SAN MARCOS (CNS) - A wrong-way car collided with another vehicle on eastbound state Route 78 in San Marcos Monday, killing both drivers, the California Highway Patrol reported.
A 1997 Nissan Maxima and a 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser collided west of San Marcos Boulevard about 3 a.m., according to CHP Officer Jim Bettencourt. It was unclear which vehicle was headed west in the eastbound lanes, he said.
The PT Cruiser's driver died at the scene, Bettencourt said. The Nissan's driver was taken to Palomar Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, he said. The names of the two dead women were not immediately released.
Bettencourt said authorities were investigating whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
The crash affected traffic in the area. Eastbound vehicles were temporarily directed off the highway at Los Posas Road, and the Grand Avenue onramp to the highway was also shut down, CHP officials said. All lanes of state Route 78 were around 5:15 a.m. and the onramp, a short time later.
Bettencourt asked that anyone who saw the crash call the CHP at (858) 637-3800.
