Search turns up empty after bear sighting in Kearny Mesa

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Several people reported seeing what appeared to be a small black bear on a Kearny Mesa hillside Wednesday, prompting authorities to initiate a search that turned up no sign of any such animal.

The wildlife sightings in the 9600 block of Ridgehaven Court were reported about 12:15 p.m., according to San Diego police.

Patrol officers, sheriff's deputies, state Fish and Wildlife personnel and a police helicopter crew combed the area on foot and by air but found no evidence that a bear was on the loose, SDPD Detective Gary Hassen said.

The search was called off after about an hour.

Authorities concluded that those who reported the sightings might have mistaken a large coyote or raccoon for a bear, according to Hassen.
