SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The man shot and killed in the Mount Hope neighborhood of southeast San Diego was publicly identified Sunday as a 32-year-old San Ysidro resident, authorities said.

Meashal Howard Fairley died shortly after 5 a.m. Saturday in the 600 block of Denby Street near Market Street, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.

Officers called to the area found the victim lying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound, San Diego police Lt. Ernie Herbert said. Paramedics were called, but Fairley died at the scene.

Herbert said it had not been determined what led to the shooting.

Witnesses described a black Dodge Magnum with black rims seen near the area at the time of the shooting, police officials said. Detectives on Saturday asked for the public's help in identifying the car's owner or driver.

Police officials said anyone who spots a vehicle matching that description should not contact its driver or occupants.

Police asked anyone with information to call the San Diego Police Department's Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293, or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
