SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – San Diego Police have arrested a teen suspect in a fatal stabbing near the Linda Vista Recreation Center.
A 19-year-old man was stabbed at the rec center located at 7064 Levant Street last week. The victim, whose name is being withheld, later died at a local hospital at 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.
The suspect, a 17-year-old, was arrested around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the laundry room of an apartment complex in the 4500 block of Rainier Avenue in Grantville and then taken to Juvenile Hall.
Police sources tell News 8 that the suspect, his girlfriend and a puppy were coming back from a Mexican restaurant where they were buying dinner, but were arrested before they were able to go inside.
As they entered the complex through the back of the building connected to a laundry room, they were confronted by San Diego Police. Homicide detectives were on scene, along with members of the gang investigations unit. The man was arrested and his girlfriend was taken in for questioning.
Police sources say this arrest was made in connection with a near-deadly stabbing at the Linda Vista Rec Center on April 25, 2013 around 4:10 p.m. Police say two men got into a fight and one was stabbed so badly that first responders thought the victim was dead. Police initially put out a bulletin calling it a homicide but later retracted, saying the victim had survived.
A prayer circle at the Linda Vista Recreation Center is planned Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. for the victim.
The 17-year-old suspect is expected to face murder charges.
