EL CAJON (CBS 8) - The man accused of starting a fire that burned through a La Mesa house has pleaded not guilty to a reckless arson charge.
Jackson Pavlicek, 31, faces up to four years in prison if he's convicted.
Prosecutors say he tossed a cigarette into some dry brush Friday afternoon, which ignited the fire. It quickly spread and fully engulfed one house, and damaged another.
"In moments something very serious can happen just from one reckless action, and so as I said the district attorney's office is taking this case seriously," Nicole Roth said.
Pavlicek is being held on $50,000 bail. A preliminary hearing has been set for May 14.
