SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Talk about a blast from the past. San Diego's historic and long-lost centennial cannon has been found after missing for decades.
The centennial cannon was cast in 1876 and made its home at Horton Plaza before mysteriously disappearing in 1945.
Bruce Coons, executive director of Save Our Heritage Organisation received a phone call just days ago from a family in Pacific Beach that had the cannon in their front yard for years and was about to throw it away.
"I can't believe it. You know, it's not often that an artifact of this magnitude just shows up after being lost for so long. The family certainly did not know the significance either. We called them and they said it really made their day," Coons said.
The 400-pound cannon is now safe at the historic Whaley House in Old Town. It should be fully restored by the end of the year.
