CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A man convicted of first-degree murder for shooting a 20-year-old outside a Chula Vista liquor store last year was sentenced Friday to 52 years to life in state prison.
Karim Alvarez, 21, was found guilty last month of murder plus gang and firearm allegations in slaying of Jimmy Rodriguez.
The victim was found with multiple gunshot wounds outside Bobar Liquor at 600 F St. around 9 p.m. on March 14, 2012, according to Chula Vista police.
Deputy District Attorney David Grapilon said Rodriguez was not a gang member, but Alvarez had picked a fight with him because he was accompanying a member of a rival gang.
Alvarez and a co-defendant, David Chavoya, were arrested in Mexico 12 days after the killing.
Chavoya, 19, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and faces 25 years to life behind bars when he is sentenced Sept. 19.
