Qualifying play Saturday for Southern California Open

CARLSBAD (CNS) - Singles qualifying play begins Saturday for the $795,707 Southern California Open women's tennis tournament at La Costa Resort and Spa, with 32 players seeking four spots in the 28-player main draw.

The top seed in the qualifying is Marina Erakovic of New Zealand, who is 79th on the Women's Tennis Association rankings. She will face Zoe Scandalis, a San Diego native who will be a junior this fall at USC.

Other participants include Coco Vandeweghe, who reached the final of the 2012 Bank of the West Classic at Stanford; Alexandra Stevenson, a 1999 Wimbledon semifinalist; and Nicole Gibbs, the 2012 and 2013 NCAA women's singles champion.

Qualifying will conclude Sunday, with main draw play beginning Monday.
