SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A motive in a deadly shooting in Bay Park is still being investigated Wednesday, but a Clairemont man is now behind bars accused of murder.
Jeret Needham, 42, was arrested after a standoff at his home. Police say he shot 45-year-old Robert Colegrove at the victim's Bay Park home.
The deadly gunfire in the 2200 block of Denver Street was reported shortly after 2:30 p.m., according to San Diego police. Needham reportedly fled the scene just after the shooting. Medics pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
Friends of the victim told investigators they believed they knew who the shooter was, leading officers to Needham's home in the 4600 block of Firestone Street in Clairemont. Officers surrounded the residence and were negotiating with Needham until about 6 p.m. Tuesday, when the man surrendered without incident.
The suspect and victim apparently had been in a dispute several hours prior to the shooting, according to police. The reason for the disagreement was unclear.
Needham has worked as a "walk-on" coach for the Clairemont Mesa school for the past three years, said Jack Brandais, spokesman for San Diego Unified School District. Prior to his arrest, Needham had been slated to resume the job at the Doliva Drive campus at the start of wrestling season, which runs from November through February.
Needham is married with children. He is being held without bail and is scheduled to be arraigned Friday.
