VISTA (CNS) - Prosecutors will not file criminal charges against a man arrested last Friday following the death of an acquaintance during an alcohol-fueled fight at an Escondido home, a spokesman for the District Attorney's Office said Tuesday.
However, Martin Vasquez, 43, remains in custody on an immigration hold, according to jail records.
District Attorney spokesman Steve Walker said the case against Vasquez was rejected, and is not under review. He did not elaborate.
Officers and paramedics responding to a report of a medical emergency in the 300 block of West Seventh Avenue about 7:30 a.m. Friday found the body of the victim, a man in his 40s whose name has not been released. He had suffered extensive blunt-force injuries to his head, Escondido police Sgt. Shannon Murphy said.
Detectives soon identified Vasquez as the alleged killer and took him into custody.
The fatality occurred during an "alcohol-fueled event" with witnesses present, Murphy said. She declined to elaborate on the reason for the dispute or say if either the suspect or victim lived at the home where it occurred.
