AM 760 Mayoral Debate 2013

On Thursday, October 31st AM 760 KFMB's Mike Slater hosted a special live debate with three of the leading candidates for San Diego mayor.

David Alvarez, Mike Aquirre and Kevin Faulconer joined Slater, who asked the candidates tough questions about the issues affecting San Diegans.

Among other issues, the three candidates discussed the city's pension.

Former City Attorney Mike Aguirre says, "what happened in Detroit ... will happen here." Aguirre told Slater that city employees need to acknowledge the city's financial situation. "We're not going to continue to not maintain our roads, our fire, our police in order to pay pensions that are through the roof." As San Diego's mayor, Aguirre says that he'd create savings by submitting less than the required 100% payment to the pension program.

Alvarez says he couldn't support such a move, which he called dangerous. "This city has gotten into way too much trouble for not meeting it's obligations."

Kevin Faulconer says he's not interested in "five to ten years of lawsuits" associated with Aguirre's pension plan.

Slater also asked the candidates about improving San Diego's neighborhoods and the future of Qualcomm Stadium.
