San Diego mayoral candidates David Alvarez and Kevin Faulconer appeared separately Thursday on The Mike Slater Show.

Both City Council members had previously agreed to appear together in a debate on AM 760. The Alvarez campaign abruptly canceled after failing to have last-minute changes made to the debate format--including the replacement of Slater of the debate moderator.

Although unwilling to debate Faulconer, Alvarez later accepted an invitation to appear on Slater's show for an hour-long interview. Faulconer talked to Slater following the Alvarez in-studio appearance.

Following the conclusion of the Alvarez interview, the council member's campaign issued a press release in which Slater is referred to as a sneaky right-wing "shock jock".  It states that Slater and Faulconer had worked together to undermine Alvarez.

Alvarez's campaign manager, Gabe Solmer, accused the Faulconer campaign of trying to "pull a fast one" regarding debate details--which had been agreed upon well in advance of the debate.

Faulconer told Slater that he was surprised by Alvarez' choice.  "San Diegans missed a real opportunity," said Faulconer, "I think they (Alvarez) made the wrong choice."

The District 2 councilmember confirmed that his campaign had no issues with any aspect of the structure of the debate.

Both candidates had participated in a similar debate on AM 760 on October 31, 2013.
