Local track, volleyball star to receive big college scholarship

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A track and volleyball star at Clairemont High School is scheduled Monday to receive a $20,000 college scholarship from Foot Locker and a surprise visit from Boston Marathon winner Meb Keflezighi.

The award for Lillie Meakim is one of 20 handed out nationwide by the shoe store chain. The company says the scholarships benefit student-athletes who excel on the fields, in the classroom and in the community.

“We created this program three years ago to provide an opportunity for higher education for exceptional student athletes who have made a positive impact within their communities and might not have been able to attend college otherwise," said Ken Hicks, the chairman, president and CEO of Foot Locker.

“We are proud to share the incredible stories of these 20 inspiring individuals, who epitomize all of the virtues and values we are looking for in a Foot Locker Scholar Athlete."

Lillie, an emancipated minor, is captain of Claremont's track and field team, a member of the volleyball team, vice president of the Key Club, and carries a 3.9 grade-point average, according to a profile on the website of the Foot Locker Scholar Athlete Program.

The profile said she has had to overcome many challenges, which were not specified. She has not decided on a college, according to Foot Locker.

Keflezighi, a graduate of San Diego High School, last month became the first American male to win the Boston Marathon in 23 years, and he did so one year after the end of the race was marred by bombings that killed three people.

It was announced last week that Keflezighi signed on to be the pace-setter for the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon's half-marathon on June 1.
