San Onofre settlement could end up costing the public

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Consumer watchdog groups say a proposed settlement surrounding the closing of the San Onofre nuclear plant is unfair to ratepayers who could end up paying the bulk of the bill.

Critics say this is a bailout that could cost every person at least $194.

A public meeting was held Tuesday night, featuring an expert on the future of nuclear waste storage. Consumer groups say shareholders - not ratepayers - should have to pay for mistakes made by SDG&E and Southern California Edison. They say the settlement amounts to little more than a bailout by consumers to the utility companies.

The San Onofre plant shut down in 2012 because of design flaws.

CBS News 8's Richard Allyn files the above video report from San Juan Capistrano with details from Tuesday night’s community meeting.
