SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The Memorial Day ceremony at Mount Soledad Monday honored a local Marine who died to save his fellow service members.
Sergeant Rafael Peralta was awarded the Navy Cross for his actions in Fallujah in 2004. After Peralta was wounded by gunfire, reports from the field indicate he pulled a live grenade underneath him to absorb the blast and protect fellow marines.
"He didn't want the recognition or the fanfare associated with his extraordinary act of heroism. He simply wanted his actions to make a difference. I stand here today as a true living testament that his actions allowed me to raise my children, and continue to serve in one fashion or another," fellow service member Nick Jones said.
Peralta was a 1997 graduate of Morse High School here in San Diego.
