Increased urgency in search for missing Ramona man

Posted: Updated:

RAMONA (CBS 8/CNS) - The search continues for a man with Alzheimer's who was last seen Monday in Ramona. Search teams resumed Wednesday, battling rough terrain trying to locate Carl Salayer, who is considered at-risk and could be hiding.

Salayer, who is 67-years-old, has Parkinson's, as well as Alzheimer's. He was last seen when he went to bed Monday at his home in the 17000 block of Handlebar Road near Highland Valley Road. He had apparently left between 2:30 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. A search and rescue team was then called to comb the area.

Wednesday search teams, including volunteers on horseback, reconvened around 6 a.m., canvassing some of the same areas around his home, in addition to new areas. One area they search included a home where they spotted shoe prints that may belong to him. They also distributed fliers throughout Ramona.

Salayer's wife, Sheryl Salayer, said she is deeply concerned that without his medication, her husband is no longer able to move.

"He is most likely not mobile at all," Sheryl Salayer told CBS News 8. "He just needs to be found. He can not call out for help, and he won't be able to get up and walk."

A family friend told CBS News 8 that they are very worried about his safety.

"I'm worried you try to stay strong keep looking hope for the best just keep praying," said Danell Marks, a family friend.

Sheriff's deputies said Salayer is in need of his medication, has a feeding tube and may be wearing only undergarments and a pair of shoes, when he left. He also might run if approached, authorities said. Wednesday, search teams blanketed the area around the Salayer home near Highland Valley Road and Handlebar Road. They found his undergarment, but not him.

Though deputies say Salayer has wandered away from his home before, he's never been gone this long.

"Usually a neighbor or someone spotted him, but no one’s seen him this time," added Marks.

"I'm trying to hold up," Sheryl Salayer said. "We're very shaken up, very nervous...but we have a lot of faith that God will bring him home."

Salayer is white, 6 feet 3 and 150 pounds with blue eyes, balding gray hair and a mustache.

Anyone who spots Salayer was asked to call the sheriff's department at (858) 565-5200, or to call 911.
