The suffering MOH patients have much to gain by an earlier treatment-focused approach since the condition is both preventable and treatable.

Journal of Pain Research has published the review Medication-overuse headache: a review.

As corresponding author, Dr Kristoffersen says, MOH is a worldwide problem and an important cause of suffering in a large group of headache patients. In this review, we suggest that information about MOH is important since the condition is preventable.

Dr Kristoffersen continues, The first step in the treatment of MOH should probably be carried out in primary care and focus primarily on withdrawal, leaving prophylactic medication to those who do not manage primary detoxification. More complicated cases should be referred to neurologists and headache clinics.

As Dr Michael Schatman, Editor-in-Chief, explains, This tremendous work represents the most comprehensive review of medical overuse headaches to appear in the literature to date.
