FALLBROOK (CNS/CBS 8) - A young Fallbrook resident was run over by a car on Fallbrook roadway early Tuesday, but it remained unclear if the victim was dead prior to being struck.
The male Hispanic victim, who was believed to be 17 years old, had been lying in the roadway of East Fallbrook Street between Potter Street and Shady Glen Drive for unknown reasons and was struck by a black Honda Civic shortly before 12:30 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol and the county Medical Examiner's Office.
The driver pulled over and called for help, and according to CHP Officer Jim Bettencourt, "did everything right." He said the Honda's driver likely would not be cited or face any charges.
"He stopped and called us. He used his vehicle to block and make sure nobody else would run him over," Bettencourt said.
CHP officials said it was unclear if another vehicle had struck the victim earlier and left the scene.
Bettencourt said the Medical Examiner's Office would determine how many cars had struck the victim and whether alcohol or drugs played a part in his death.
The victim's name was not immediately released.
