DESCANSO (CNS) - Two people were seriously injured Tuesday after being ejected from an SUV that crashed following a high-speed chase involving U.S. Border Patrol officers on Interstate 8.
Officers attempted to stop a Ford Expedition that was traveling westbound on the freeway near Buckman Springs Road in Descanso around 10:45 a.m. The driver failed to stop for the Border Patrol -- the reason for the traffic stop was not released -- and continued driving at high speed through mountainous southeast San Diego County, authorities said.
The driver lost control of the SUV as he approached slower traffic, which caused the Expedition to leave the road, become airborne and roll down a dirt embankment. The vehicle came to rest on its roof, according to Border Patrol.
Two of the five occupants were not wearing seatbelts and sustained major injuries after being ejected from the SUV, authorities said. The other two passengers experienced minor to moderate injuries. They were all taken to San Diego hospitals.
The uninjured driver attempted to flee the scene and is in Border Patrol custody.
The names of those involved were not immediately released.
